The South Korean film Parasite ;made Academy Award history on Sunday, February 9, 2020. The comedy-thriller broke boundaries by becoming the first film that’s not in the English language to win Best Picture. But the top prize wasn’t the only award ;Parasite ;earned that night. Director Bong Joon-ho won for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (shared with Han Jin Won), and Best International Feature, too. Bong accepted his awards and spoke through his translator—25-year-old filmmaker Sharon Choi—conveying his elation during each of the film’s victories. “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is, ‘The most personal is the most creative,’” he said while receiving the directing trophy. “That quote was from our great Martin Scorsese,” Bong added in English, connecting the two cultures and bringing the crowd to its feet. In that moment, there’s no denying that the excitement for Bong and his incomparable film permeated through the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. But, Parasite gained a devoted following long before Oscar night. The film inspired people from all around the world, including artists and designers who took it upon themselves to pay homage to this cinematic masterpiece. In fact, several fans decided to design their own posters for the film, playing with visual and metaphoric themes of the movie. The film transcends race, culture, creed, and anything else that may separate people. It is a universal and timeless tale understood by people all around the world. The film is something that you should experience without any spoilers, so we won’t say anything about the sordid tale of have-nots and have-lots. If you haven’t seen this film, the Parasite website will direct you to a theater where it is playing near you. In the meantime, scroll down to see the different iterations of the film’s poster—some created by fans around the world. Photographer Mark Seliger and Vanity Fair are commemorating the A-list attendees (and their fabulous frocks) through striking portraiture. As in previous years, they set up an Oscar Portrait Studio at the magazine’s famous after-party and shared a selection of the images on their website and Instagram. The Portrait Studio is reinvented with each new awards season. For 2020, the set recalled a moody, sparsely decorated apartment in an old warehouse. Equipped with a rotary phone, a cast-iron radiator, a small library, and a loveseat, the scene looked as though it was plucked from another era. Some stars, like Tracee Ellis Ross, chose to take advantage of the entire space. In her photo, she leans back against the arm of the couch and wistfully stares out the clouded windows. Other celebrities favored a cropped portrait that highlighted the light streaming in from the outside. Robert De Niro, for instance, looks towards the window in a reflective moment. Seliger chose to focus on the actor’s expression and exclude the rest of the set. This emotional photograph, as with the rest of Seliger’s work that night, stands in stark contrast to what was certainly a roaring party nearby. Left to their own devices, the bees at Bodiam Castle in Robertsbridge, United Kingdom made quite the spectacle. Within the structure of their hive, they created a delightful heart-shaped honeycomb that looks as sweet as it tastes. This may seem like an odd sight, but that’s only because we’re used to beekeepers placing rectangular frames within the hive. The bees then deposit their honey and build a comb directly onto the frame, which can be easily taken out and harvested by the beekeeper. But the reality is, bees will use as much space as they have to store honey. In fact, natural hives can take on all shapes and sizes. For instance, sugarbag bees, which are native to Australia, make hives that form large spiraling structures. In temperate climates, some bees will even form an “open colony” where the entire hive is exposed. These can hang off of trees, fences, or overhangs and take on impressive oblong shapes. Still, the photograph from Bodiam Castle is fascinating because it was formed within the wood frame of a hive. Beekeeper gregthegregest2 mentioned on Reddit that this is a common occurrence when the bees are left a large gap between the top of the frames and the roof of the hive. Of course, it makes good sense that these hard workers would take advantage of every inch given to them. While the shape is beautiful, this can be a headache for beekeepers when looking to harvest their honey. They need to cut away the extra honeycomb in order to free the frames below. Of course, the skill of bees is well known. In fact, even artists have taken advantage of their capabilities by working with bees to create everything from sculptures to embroidery. So the next time you see a honey bee buzzing from flower to flower, just imagine what interesting artistry might happen when it makes its way back to the hive. Every once in a while, videos of these animals hunting together make the rounds online, causing people to wonder just how this odd couple works. The answer is mutualism. Defined as a beneficial relationship between two different species that helps both survive, it’s the phenomenon that brings these animals together. Specifically, coyotes and badgers are often found hunting together during the summer. Each animal helps balance the other and together they form a well-rounded hunter that can more easily take down prey. Quick coyotes can chase down fleeing animals, while badgers can go after prey that burrow underground. It’s been shown that by working in tandem, both species are more successful hunters than if they went it alone. Of course, this doesn’t mean that they always work together. For instance, during the winter, badgers can find prey more easily. They simply burrow into the dens of hibernating animals and have their feast, meaning that they don’t need to rely on coyotes during that time of year. And even throughout the summer, it’s not unusual to see a coyote or a badger hunting alone. The relationship isn’t exclusive and both species are known to hunt without the other around. Still, seeing these different species together, particularly when both are known for their fierce hunting abilities, is an intriguing sight.
